About Our Opportunity

We’re looking to transform the way we serve our citizens and to strengthen our team with the addition of a new Managing Cloud Engineer. This position is part of the User-Centred Technology and Cybersecurity division that builds and operates backbone technology services supporting the delivery of modern digital experiences to Nova Scotians; We also work hard on increasing the security posture of our technology environments to protect Nova Scotians’ valuable data. We have been on a journey of using Cloud, especially Public Cloud, as a channel to enable us delivering services quickly, securely and scalable.

 

Specifically, we are interested in candidates who are as equally adept at setting up Cloud platforms as they are leading and coaching people. Within this role you will not only be responsible for leading, coaching, and mentoring the Cloud and DevOps team, you will also be part of empowered multi-disciplinary teams working in the open on complex digital products to modernize how government delivers services digitally with privacy, security, and accessibility in mind. You will have the opportunity to learn from and be supported by a senior leadership team that embraces user-centred design, agility, working in the open and empowered, multi-disciplinary teams.

 

What You Will Be Doing

  • Lead teams in designing, building, operating and continuously improving Cloud and DevOps platforms and services; teams could include internal staff and/or external partners.
  • Defines strategy for technology practices to deliver consistent and reusable user-centred cloud products. For example, defining cloud platform reference architecture, supporting tools, integration patterns, etc.
  • Act as principal Cloud Engineer (hands-on), including identifying the most optimal cloud-based solutions for our partners and maintaining cloud infrastructures in accordance with best practices and government security policies.
  • Educate teams on the implementation of new cloud technologies and initiatives.
  • Ensure efficient functioning of data storage and process functions in accordance with government security policies and best practices in cloud security.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve infrastructure vulnerabilities and application deployment issues.
  • Regularly review existing systems and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Motivate and support your team, remove blockers to ensure work is delivered on time.
  • Promote a diverse and inclusive culture of teamwork and transparency by working in the open.
  • Work under pressure, at times, with tight deadlines and multiple priorities.
  • Work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team of product managers, researchers, designers and policy professionals in an agile development environment
  • Promote resilience and responsiveness in the organization by being open and honest about challenges and the actions required to address unexpected developments
  • Support project and program managers with work break down structures, scoping, resource planning, estimates for delivering cloud solutions

What You Bring to the Table

As a Managing Cloud Engineer, you must have demonstrated experience designing, building and implementing Cloud platforms in a complex enterprise environment.

 

Experience required:

At least 3 years of experience in the field of cloud computing.
At least 5 years of experience in a leadership capacity leading, coaching, and mentoring team of technical professionals.
Adopting platform-as-a-service offered natively from Public Cloud.
Infrastructure-as-Code framework and automation of Cloud workload provisioning.
Cloud billing, governance, and operating models.
Troubleshooting and analytical skills.
Good communication and collaboration skills.
Presenting and making recommendations to senior leaders, vendors or teams of technical staff.
Keeping on top new architecture trends, development best practices and able to quickly learn new technologies and willingness to pick the right tool for the job
Supporting delivery of digital services including work break down structures, scoping, resource planning, time and financial estimates for solution delivery.

Knowledge and experience in the following would be an asset:

Azure, AWS, or GCP certifications.
Open-source principles and technologies.
DevOps and CI/CD practices, and related technology platforms.
Provisioning and deploying container-friendly or other cloud-native applications.
OpenShift container management platform.
Git-based (GitLab or GitHub) or Cloud Native (such as Azure DevOps) CI/CD repository and pipeline tools.
Hands-on knowledge of TerraForm or Azure Bicep

Pay Grade: EC 12

Salary Range: $3,458.20 – $4,322.75 Bi-Weekly
